“Concept USK” Surviving Urban Disaster Pt 1

Part 1: Sometimes the city is a bad place to be. But millions find themselves linked to the city, living, working, or recreating. Cessation of services, terrorists attacks, economic or governmental collapse, rioting (for a variety of reasons), and devastating NATURAL disasters can transform a usually-bustling and mostly safe urbanscape into a wasteland where emergency services are either overwhelmed or just unavailable. You may quickly find your survival (and those around you) will be up to you. Go prepared, both with a calm, can-do mindset that will allow you to overcome, adapt, and survive bad situations (and help others to do the same). In this series of vids, I introduce my “Concept USK” or Urban Survival Kit and its philosophy as requested by many TNPrs. A possible motto as you work your way through urban chaos: “Prepare, Survive, Render Aid, Lead.” Some Nutnfancy foundations of the review: most kits will evolve according to need and technology, a kit will have to be personalized for your situation, adherence to legalities of some contents is your responsibility, it’s impossible to prepare for every contingency and SAWC (Space/Size And Weight Constraints) will dictate your level of preparation and kit “depth,” preparations for self-defense are wise, the necessity to blend in and not draw attention to yourself, the concepts of “write-off,” re-stocking, pre-postioning, and redundancy in kit preparation, and guidelines for use. In Part 1 these foundations are discussed

Cold Weather Survival Evaluation

Are you ready to bug out in cold weather? What gear would you need? How would you stay clean? I thought I was ready until I actually tried winter camping for ten days. I had a lot to learn, the hard, cold way. Sot and I arrived on Sunday and were stoked to get on the trail to find a place to set up camp. The snow wasn’t deep enough to need snowshoes, which also meant we wouldn’t be making any snow shelters like a quinzee or snow cave. After some scouting we found an open area ideal for setting up the 11 foot diameter tipi and outside fire pit. The hike in only took about 15 minutes with our over packed sleds, and we’re both sadly out of shape. Each sled was loaded with about 60 pounds of gear. After we caught our breath we started to set up. The woodstove and teepee didn’t take long, and within a couple of hours we had a working campsite complete with an outside firepit and lean-to. We froze for the first three nights as I just couldn’t get the stove in the tepee to work. Even with our mountains of wool blankets. In fact, we spent much of the first three nights hanging out in the truck with the heater on waiting for the sun to rise so we could drive to town and have a hot breakfast. Sot had enough of the cold, hard living by Thursday, so I drove him home. While driving him home I got more supplies and the keys for my friend’s cabin that’s on the land we were camping on. I thought it would be great to recover with some easier living in the cabin but I was in for a rude

Disaster Preparedness Series: The Plan

In this video we discuss the Family Disaster Plan. Every family should have some type of plan. It is up to you to decide what to put in your plan and how in depth you want it, however you need to KEEP IT SIMPLE! Focus on the things you can control, and the weakness and fix them. You family comes first ! You should put things in your plan such as: copies of important documents and records, copies of credit cards, account numbers, user names and passwords, inventories of possessions and receipts especially for high dollar items like guns, computers, tv’s etc., have an evacuation plan, communications plan, places to bug out or go, and anything else you may need. I hope this video helps you to get thinking about the importance of Disaster Preparedness. Even if nothing ever happens, you will have the peace of mind knowing that you and your family has prepared.

How To Build a Rolling Composter for CHEAP

This is an update of THE cheapest rolling composter ever. Get usable compost in 4 months instead of a year! Take a food grade barrel with a removable lid, drill holes in the sides and bottom, and start composting. It’s easy to use, just add 50% brown (dry) and 50% green (wet) organic matter and roll it a few times a week. Don’t fill it over 75% and it’ll never be to heavy to handle. Though not as good as worm composters, rolling, or tumbling composters are the fastest way to turn lawn clippings, food scraps, plant matter, leaves and twigs into black, organic, inert compost. Biointensive, or square-foot gardening requires at least one if not several composters. That way the external input will be minimized leading toward greater self-sufficiency. Which is another excellent use for rolling composters. Forget bins and files, they take way too long-usually over a year. And you have to “turn” the organic matter with a pitch fork or shovel. With a rolling composter, you can cut that time down to 3-4 months. Rolling composters are especially good in urban survival situations, or bugging in. The compliment rain barrels perfectly. Turn that lawn in a prize-winning Victory garden with a rolling compost tumbler and a rainbarrel!
