Amazing video: Transit of Venus across the Sun 2012

The transit of Venus across the Sun has enthralled astronomers and amateur stargazers alike. They gathered across the world to view the rare phenomenon. The planet appeared as a small black pinhole moving slowly across the face of our Sun. People turned their gaze to the small silhouette of Venus in a spectacle that will not be seen again until 2117. Stellarium Sky Tour – May 2012 – Galaxies & May 20th Annular Solar Eclipse

My name is Kurt and I’m back in Stellarium for what will be a regular series on interesting astronomical sights and events you can view each month! In this video we take a quick tour of popular springtime objects, including many galaxies and some early views of summer observing targets. The planets Venus, Mars and Saturn are dominating the night skies and always worth taking a look at. On May 20th at sunset there will be an annular solar eclipse visible from the US, favoring those near the west coast. Information and maps for the May 20th eclipse: en.wikipedia.org Get your solar eclipse glasses and support Astronomers Without Borders here: www.astronomerswithoutborders.org Stellarium is a free open source planetarium software available for Windows, Mac and Linux. Prepare for 2012 13 Tekpatl. Calendar Nemontemi.

In Preparation for the Nemontemi, the last 5 days of the year 12 Akatl, consider this… These days are for self empowerment, asking us to take look at our achievements of this past year, good or not so good. It does not matter really, for our journey of the Spirit/Soul reminds that all is perfect, no “matter” what. We are coming out of this year 12 Akatl, “Reed”, which represents the internal self. This past year, all humanity was having to face their internal selves and seeing what they truly are made of. Observation, memory, analysis and sub-conscious activity played a role, and still a “key” of 12 Akatl, until March 11, 2012 at sunset. So from March 6, 2012 at Noon, begin with utilizing the Nemontemi for 12 Akatl, Going into the new year 13 Tekpatl Flint. tlauizteotl@me.com

Low Temp Brown Dwarf Discovered in Leo Constellation Emitting Radio Freqs April 2012 – J1047+21

THE ARECIBO DETECTION OF THE COOLEST RADIO-FLARING BROWN DWARF – We report the detection of sporadic, circularly polarized flares from the T6.5 dwarf, 2MASS J1047+21, with the Arecibo radio telescope at 4.75 GHz. This is by far the coolest brown dwarf yet detected at radio frequencies. The fact that such an object is capable of generating observable, coherent radio emission, despite its very low, ~900 K temperature, demonstrates the feasibility of studies of brown dwarfs of the meagerly explored L, T, and Y spectral types, using radio detection as a tool. iopscience.iop.org Astronomers Detect Coolest Radio Star – Columbia, MD, April 17, 2012 – Astronomers using the world’s largest radio telescope, at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, have discovered flaring radio emission from an ultra-cool star, not much warmer than the planet Jupiter, shattering the previous record for the lowest stellar temperature at which radio waves were detected. The team from Penn State University’s Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics and the Center for Exoplanets and Habitable Worlds has been using the giant 305-m (1000-ft) telescope to look for radio signals from a class of objects known as brown dwarfs. These are small, cold stars that bridge the gap between Jupiter-like giant planets and normal, more massive, hydrogen-fusing stars. They hit the jackpot with a star named J1047+21, a brown dwarf 33.6 light years away in the constellation Leo, in a result that could boost the odds of discovering life

Astronomer’s Paradise

It’s cold, it’s dry, the air is thin. The nearest city is miles away across a barren landscape of boulder-strewn hills. At night, the only lights to guide you are the stars in the sky. Astronomers, welcome to paradise. Known as the driest place on Earth, Chile’s Atacama Desert has long been recognized as an ideal spot for ground-based telescopes. The skies are free of light pollution, and the high plains enjoy long stretches of steady atmospheric conditions, allowing astronomers to peer deeply into the cosmos without having to worry about turbulence distorting the data. (Related blog: “The Dry Edge of Life—Studying ‘Martians’ in Chile.”) In the new time-lapse movie above, photographers Christoph Malin and Babak Tafreshi (founder of The World at Night, or TWAN, program) offer a rarely seen glimpse of Cerro Paranal, one of the high hills in the Atacama that houses instruments for the European Southern Observatory(ESO). Made by invitation from the ESO, the video includes more than 7500 still images taken between October and November 2011. It shows the beauty of the dark Atacama skies, sometimes framed by the four main domes of the Very Large Telescope, as well as a brief “behind the scenes” look at what telescope operators see from inside one of the domes. In an email to National Geographic, Tafreshi says of the Atacama: There are not many locations left on this planet where you can still experience a dark sky like this. I have been to similar dark skies in other continents

Nostradamus 2012

Whatever is in store–a massive cosmic collision, a global environmental disaster, an Armageddon-like religious showdown, or a more subtle transformation–many believe that December 21, 2012 will mark a major shift in the history of our planet. There is no cogent distinction between the sobering facts and hysterical fiction–what, if any, modern scientific proof exists? Is there any other compelling evidence throughout history that 2012 will be a year of unprecedented, deadly upheaval? This special looks for the parallels between the nightmarish daily headlines and the 2012 prophecies from Nostradamus and others. From the mystical realms of the Guatemalan jungles to the Hopi elders and Mayan shaman to respected thinkers of the modern age–Nostradamus’ doomsday warning will be cast in a frighteningly modern context.
