2012, what do you think?

What are your opinions on what is going to happen on 2012? I think that there is going to be a change in consciousness and that peace may be possible. However, until then, the world will have disaster after disaster. Just like the earthquakes, tsunami, tornadoes, etc. to clean out the old world to bring in the new. I think that world peace may be possible and whatever the change is, I’m sure it’s a positive one.

By this, I mean there is going to be so much change in the world that it will be obvious that the way we live currently is not going to work for us to survive on this planet and we will have more of a mindset of "One People" and be peaceful and work together to change things for the better.

Has the Astronomy & Space forum become increasingly abusive?

I’ve been answering questions here for two years. Maybe I’m imagining it, but it seems that the number of abusive answers — vicious attacks on the questioner and on other answerers — has really increased, and these tend to poison the atmosphere of this forum (even more so than the grossly excessive questions on 2012). Do others think that there has been a change for the worse in the tenor of the answers?
Wolfe – Good first sentence! Society changes, but usually not too much in two years; but you’re right that the number of YA users may have changed a lot.

Adam – The conspiracy questions are regrettable, but there are a lot of people who believe these things. Given that, maybe it’s not a bad thing that they can ask questions here. You can’t reason with a really irrational person, but perhaps with good answers you can reach some of the people. That’s the hope, anyway.

Meanolmaw & Sysiphean Death – I’m very aware of all the problems that you mention. Don’t get me started about the questions! My point here, however, is about abuse in the answers.

I’ll be offline for the day — will check in later.
Say goodbye – It will be interesting to check the A&S forum on December 22, 2012 and see what lessons have been learned, if any. (If the doomsayers are correct, that won’t be possible! The probability that they’re right, however, is less than the reciprocal of Avogadro’s number.)

DLM – All good points. The concept of YA is such a good one – people ask questions (particularly questions that can’t be answered easily with a web search), and knowledgeable people provide good answers. The reality, unfortunately, falls far short of the ideal. I don’t know how you can fix these things short of having a fair and knowledgeable moderator – a daunting task considering the vast number of questions and answers each day on YA.
Dump the liberals – I’d be happy to discuss the notion of offensive political views with you sometime, but this isn’t the right place for it. If you’d like, send me an email. I certainly have no argument with your astronomy answers, which are first-rate. Like the standards for obscenity, it’s pretty easy to identify abusive answers when you see them, and I see them pretty often.

Tom E – It would be nice not to see another 2012 question here ever again, but that probably won’t happen until 2013. YA should really create a whole new category called “2012” and move those questions out of astronomy.

Something Smells Fishy ACA – I’d better stay away from the Religion & Spirituality section. At least astronomy questions often have objective answers.
