Surviving Disasters : Jim Rawles, Bill Osmunson : Coast To Coast AM 1/3 October 12, 2011

Surviving Disasters : Jim Rawles, Bill Osmunson : Coast To Coast AM 1/3 October 12, 2011 Survivalism expert Jim Rawles discussed what we can do to prepare for disasters and catastrophes, particularly in the case of the power grid being knocked out. The greatest threat we face is from socioeconomic collapse, which could be triggered by mass inflation, leading to the dollar becoming worthless, he said. While the US has had local and regional disasters, we’ve never had a national event, such as an EMP attack or huge solar storm that would take down the entire grid. People need to be prepared and learn self-sufficiency in the event of such an outcome, he advised, adding that if there’s severe damage to the power grid it could take years to restore service. One of the most important things for preparation is a water filtration system– “If you don’t have water within 24 hours, you’re going to be a refugee,” he said. People in northern climates also have to consider heating issues, such as having a working fireplace and expedition-quality sleeping bags. He recommended that people have up to a three-year supply of food– one year for themselves, and the rest to give to charity. Interestingly, he also suggested stockpiling nickels. In contrast to other current coins, the 5 cent pieces are made from copper and nickel, and may at some point in the future have some utility for barter, he said. Low cost training options (such as through the Red Cross) can put you and your family

Cold Weather Survival Evaluation

Are you ready to bug out in cold weather? What gear would you need? How would you stay clean? I thought I was ready until I actually tried winter camping for ten days. I had a lot to learn, the hard, cold way. Sot and I arrived on Sunday and were stoked to get on the trail to find a place to set up camp. The snow wasn’t deep enough to need snowshoes, which also meant we wouldn’t be making any snow shelters like a quinzee or snow cave. After some scouting we found an open area ideal for setting up the 11 foot diameter tipi and outside fire pit. The hike in only took about 15 minutes with our over packed sleds, and we’re both sadly out of shape. Each sled was loaded with about 60 pounds of gear. After we caught our breath we started to set up. The woodstove and teepee didn’t take long, and within a couple of hours we had a working campsite complete with an outside firepit and lean-to. We froze for the first three nights as I just couldn’t get the stove in the tepee to work. Even with our mountains of wool blankets. In fact, we spent much of the first three nights hanging out in the truck with the heater on waiting for the sun to rise so we could drive to town and have a hot breakfast. Sot had enough of the cold, hard living by Thursday, so I drove him home. While driving him home I got more supplies and the keys for my friend’s cabin that’s on the land we were camping on. I thought it would be great to recover with some easier living in the cabin but I was in for a rude

SHTF Preparation

Reginald Kaigler’s video about my preparation for what I believe to be an inevitable economic disaster. I think the US economy is going to collapse, so I have begun storing food, water and ammo. I talk about the importance of preparing for an emergencies, constructing a survival bag and owning a gun. I chose a Glock 21 and a Mossberg 500. This is not Armageddon or doomsday. It’s just preparing for a rainy day. I answer all of your bug out questions here. demcad.blogspot.com

Survival System (BOB Part 1)

This is part 4 of my Survival System Series but part 1 of the actual Bug Out Bag (bail out bag, get home bag, 72 hour kit, etc) phase. This BOB system contains the actual BOB itself (the medium Alice), as well as a duffel (which I probably won’t carry) and the Mossberg 500. As always, you can customize your BOB to fit what you feel will be your personal survival needs. I’m open to comments or suggestions on things that should be inside of it or missing items. 🙂
