In Whom Do We Trust?

If we don’t direct our faith toward God or into some authentic way of the soul, then we direct it toward progress or science or weaponry or education or nature or human nature or doctors or gurus or genetic engineers or computers or NASA.  And as we reduce the objects of our faith and so reduce our faith, we inevitably reduce ourselves.–Wendell Berry, Another Turn of the Crank

There’s a popular stereotype of survivalists as grim, paranoid people holing up with their food and weapons on the outskirts of society, distrusting and fending off everyone except themselves and perhaps a few like-minded cranks. Like most stereotypes, this image is exaggerated and mostly untrue. If we are faithful to our calling as Christian preppers it will not be true of us at all. Also like most stereotypes, it has some very limited basis in truth—and therein lies a warning for us.

It’s true that survivalists and homesteaders tend not to place our faith in governments, corporations or the global economy or the status quo. We tend to doubt the promise that our nation’s armies and our own retirement accounts will keep us safe and well supplied. Many of us have come to believe that these are deceitful promises, false securities.  Many of us also believe that placing our faith in these things diminishes us.

It is very difficult, if not impossible, for humans to live without having faith in something. So when we withdraw our faith from the systems around us we must decide where we will bestow it.

We can put our trust in ourselves, in our skills, our stockpiled goods, our courage and wit and resourcefulness. This may feel empowering for a while, but we will be tempted to set ourselves against our neighbors in our pride and fear. We will be tempted to despair when we fail in our work, or as we see ourselves approaching death.

Or we can put our trust in God. We can  work diligently as stewards of God’s creation. We can care for neighbors and welcome strangers, following Gods commands. We will still fail at times, but our failure will not lead us to despair, because God’s faithfulness does not falter like ours, and God’s strength is manifest even in our weakness. We will still die, but God will abide.

The Raw Power of Milk

Imagine owning a cow. You have done all the research, read all of the data, and have made the choice to move your family to a raw milk diet. However, you live in the city and do not have the space to house a dairy cow on your property. So, you join forces with another individual who can offer lodging and responsible caretaking for your new cow. You make the arrangements, feeling confident this is the best decision for your family. Once a week, you agree to pick up the raw milk and other raw dairy products only to realize the farm is located too far for you to make it regularly. A local farmer agrees to deliver the products to your house, including your raw milk. Because of where you live, the moment he attempts to make the first delivery, you learn both he, and you are in violation of federal law, according to the Department of Agriculture, or your own state’s regulations.

Although it may seem like the beginnings of a far-fetched alternate reality story, this is a very real problem faced by a multitude of individuals in a number of states across America. People just like you are making the decision to take care of their families in the healthiest way they know how, which includes using raw milk. However, health regulations prohibit the transportation of raw milk from a primary source. In many states, current policy requires the consumer to physically go and pick up the milk themselves.

This is one of many dilemmas Peter Kennedy is currently battling as President of the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF). His organization’s mission is to protect the rights of family farms trying to deliver process and unprocessed foods to consumers and he, along with other individuals, is valiantly fighting a Goliath of an enemy: government agencies, their lobbyists, and their additional outside supporters.

History Of Raw Milk Regulation

The interstate shipment of raw milk and raw milk products was banned in 1987 when the FDA mandated pasteurization of these products. Exceptions were allowed for cheese as long as it had been aged for sixty days and was labeled unpasteurized. Intrastate consumption and delivery became another issue. Each state has the right to determine their own regulations on the sale, consumption, and delivery of raw milk and raw dairy products within the confines of their own state. Guidelines vary from state to state, ranging from the authority to legally sell and deliver raw milk and its products to having no ability whatsoever to do that. Currently, there are 21 states with some sort of regulation, court decision, or policy in place that limit an individual’s ability to sell or transport raw milk or raw dairy products.

Click here to listen to Bill’s radio interview with Peter Kennedy, the president of the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund.

Current Legal Concerns

A variety of legal cases centering on this topic have been filed over the past several years. These cases, both at the federal and state levels are sparking attention to the cause of transportation and consumption of raw milk and raw milk products. In many instances, these are cases that have been brought against plaintiffs who have chosen to deliver or sell raw milk. In other situations, the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund has filed suit on behalf of local organizations to protect their right to choose the type of milk they sell, transport, and deliver. Recently, the FTCLDF filed suit against the FDA for constitutional violations in banning the transportation of raw milk and raw dairy products at an interstate level.

Raw milk debates often move beyond the arena of simple commerce law and into personal realms as well though. Approximately six years ago, in the midst of a divorce case in Florida, with custody of children at stake, raw milk played a key role. Although both parents ended up with joint custody, their judge informed the father she would revoke his custody if she learned he was giving the children raw milk.

Just as with other legal topics, the reality is that future case law and precedent are established every time the court confers a decision on a case. In this instance of raw milk consumption and transportation, these precedents may extend beyond the realm of simple regulations and into the arena of personal rights, responsibilities, and choices.

Proposed Federal Legislation

Originally introduced as HR778 in a prior session of congress, a new resolution, HR 1830, was recently re-introduced by Congressman Ron Paul. This bill, which would in effect do away with any interstate ban on raw milk for human consumption, was sponsored by five other Representatives before it died in its current committee. Two outside organizations, Weston A. Price and Farm to Consumer Legal defense Fund currently support the legislation while a larger number of other organizations are one record as opposing it.

Future Education And Opportunities

Learning all facts and facets of the details surrounding the raw milk transportation regulations is critical. Cow Share College and Goat Share University offer educational tele-seminars several times a year that can help with this. Not only do these seminars provide excellent information for consumers, but they serve as opportunities to allow farms to raise capital by selling ownership in their dairy animals as well as gather significant secondary income by the boarding of their animals.

In their most recent FDA approved safety modernization act, The Food and Drug Administration now has taken increasingly larger amounts of power when it comes to regulating commerce within a state. They are taking over more control of what was once state autonomy in the name of public safety. Along with this power comes a loss of personal right to choose foods and resources you feel may be best for your family. If you want to make a difference in this process, help focus on your local communities food sources. Investigate the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund website for more information on your state regulations and other ways you can support this process.

Homeland Security Set to Deploy “Molecular Strip-Search” Devices at Airports and Roadside Checkpoints

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – The Department of Homeland Security will soon be using a laser at airports that can detect everything about you from over 160 feet away. This is being made possible by the Picosecond Programmable Laser, a new laser-based scanner that can read everything from a person’s adrenaline levels, to traces of gun powder on a person’s clothes, to illegal substances without subjects even knowing they have been scanned.

These laser detection devices are slated to be widely deployed across airports, roadside checkpoints, sports stadiums and anywhere else the government wants to surveil the public. It also could be used on multiple people at a time, eliminating random searches at airports.

Picosecond scanner targets it subjects with lasers which vibrate molecules that are then read by the machine that determines what substances a person has been exposed to. This could be anything from Semtex explosives to the pastrami and rye they had for lunch.

The inventor of this invasive technology is Genia Photonics. Active since 2009, they hold 30 patents on laser technology designed for scanning. In 2011, they formed a partnership with In-Q-Tel, a company chartered by the CIA and Congress to build “a bridge between the Agency and a new set of technology innovators.”

The device made by Genia Photonics wouldn’t be the only one out there. George Washington University developed something similar in 2008. The Russians also developed something akin to the Picosecond Programmable laser. The creators of that scanner claim that “it is even able to detect traces of explosives left by fingerprints.” But what makes Genia Photonics’ version so special is that the machine is more compact compared to the other devices and can still maintain its incredible range.

Although the technology could be used by “Big Brother,” Genia Photonics states that the device could be far more beneficial being used for medical purposes to check for cancer in real time, lipids detection, and patient monitoring.

But Gizmodo reports that it’s Homeland Security, not the American Medical Association, that has been the first to plan to use the device.

“The technology is so incredibly effective that, in November 2011, its inventors were subcontracted by In-Q-Tel to work with the US Department of Homeland Security. In-Q-Tel is a company ‘founded in February 1999 by a group of private citizens at the request of the Director of the CIA and with the support of the U.S. Congress.’ According to In-Q-Tel, they are the bridge between the Agency and new technology companies.”

“Their plan is to install this molecular-level scanning in airports and border crossings all across the United States. The official, stated goal of this arrangement is to be able to quickly identify explosives, dangerous chemicals, or bioweapons at a distance.

“The machine is ten million times faster — and one million times more sensitive — than any currently available system. That means that it can be used systematically on everyone passing through airport security, not just suspect or randomly sampled people.”

If the manufacturer’s reports are to be believed, the technology can even penetrate clothing and skin, detecting chemicals inside your body. In an instant, even without your knowledge, this device will be able to determine what you ate for breakfast, whether you’re ovulating, whether you have cancer, how long ago you consumed alcohol, and even how much adrenaline is currently pumping through your veins.

This invasive technology, combined with personal information millions of citizens freely give up every day, would enable a police state to effectively catalogue virtually everything about person without their direct knowledge.

Holy Joy

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.—Philippians 4:8

As Christian preppers we live an alternative to the culture around us. We are often uncomfortably aware of the wider culture’s failings—its shallowness, unsustainability, injustice, lack of faith. As we deepen community with our neighbors and live as our brothers’ keepers we are confronted by the terrible ways in which these widespread failings harm particular people. As we live closer to the land we also become more intensely aware of ecological problems, from immediate struggles with drought, flood and disease to longer-term threats of aquifer depletion, pollution and climate change.

These problems are real. We have to acknowledge them. We have to shape our lives in a  way that doesn’t contribute to these problems and that does give us resilience to deal with them. But in order not to succumb to bitterness and burnout, we need to remember that these harsh realities are not the ultimate reality, that these painful truths are not the whole truth.

We need to pay attention to the things that are honorable, just, lovely and pure. We need to take time to notice and give thanks for the beauty of the created world, to look at the sky, to savor wild berries and garden produce, to listen to the birds and smell the freshness after rain. We need to see the kindness and courage of our neighbors as well as their brokenness. We need to be sensitive to God’s spirit at work in us and to remember the times when we were faithful to that spirit, as well as repenting the times when we were not. We need to remember the slow and patient work of God, in our souls and in the world, that heals the sick and brings the dead to new life. In order to know and bear the world’s sorrow responsibly, we need to be supported by the joy of God.

10 Online Security Myths

When it comes to online security, you can get in more trouble by believing things that just aren’t true. Here are the truths behind some common online-security myths that may be influencing your online security practices. If you know the truth, you can make better decisions about protecting yourself online. Here are some myths many people believe about online security.

My Password Is Secure

The truth is that the majority of passwords are far weaker than we think they are. For example, obscure long dictionary words are not good passwords. In fact, passwords shouldn’t be regular words at all. A passphrase with some special characters is by far the best—for example, instead of “kittens,” use “k1tt3n$.”

It’s Okay To Use A Single Secure Password For Different Accounts

You should never share passwords between accounts in different organizations. In other words, you don’t want your password for your bank account to be the same as your password for your Gmail account, your Twitter account, or your Facebook account. If a password is exposed on one account, then all your accounts are potentially exposed.

An Anti-Virus Solution Eliminates All My Worries

An anti-virus tool does not protect you from everything. No software program can prevent someone from doing dumb things like clicking on a suspicious link in an email or providing a bank account number to someone you don’t really know.

Mac Users Are Immune From Such Attacks

While it is true that there are currently less viruses targeting Mac users, more people are using Macs and iPhones these days, and as a result, we are already seeing malware that targets Macs.

Facebook And Twitter Friend’s Links Can Be Trusted

Because of the popularity of Facebook and Twitter, the same bad guys who have been sending spam via email and perpetrating online scams are now targeting social networks. These people have ways to post messages that look like they are from your friends but really aren’t.

How to stay under the radar, hide your guns, and other off grid caches…

A Locked Padlock Displayed On My Browser Means A Website Is Secure

Not all browsers use the locked-padlock symbol. Not only that, but cybercriminals are quite adept at reproducing it.

An Email From Someone I Know Is Always Okay To Respond To

If you get an email from a friend or relative saying something like, “I’m in Paris, and I was robbed. I can’t get home—please wire me money,” don’t fall for it. The likelihood of that is so small; you should try to contact that friend directly. Their account could have been compromised. Try to contact them, but not through their email account.

Authentic-Looking Email Can Be Trusted

Consider the context of an email and what it’s asking you. This can be hard, although sometimes the bad guys are comically inept. You have to ask if it makes sense for this person or business to be asking you for this information. Scammers tend to make their phishing expeditions time-sensitive. They often come just before Christmas or April 15th for good reason.

You Should Respond To The Scammer To Tell Them To Stop

If you respond and ask a spammer to remove you from his list, you’ll probably get more spam. Mark them as spam and forget them.

Viewing An Email Message Without Clicking On Any Attachments Or Links Is Safe

If you think an email is probably spam or a scam, don’t open it! There are ways an attacker can launch an email attack that doesn’t require you to click on a link—ways that can be just as dangerous as clicking on an infected attachment.
